IC:
Character Name: Edward Elric

Canon: Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood + Sabra La Tau

AU/OC/Previous Game: AU from Brotherhood via SLT; he follows SLT's true end, but is AU to his own true end (dying many years too early)

Age: 67

Appearance: He's still physically fit, though much older than canon, and looking quite a bit like his father at this point. There's some white showing up along the edges of his hair, though it blends nicely with the blond rather than standing out too much. He now wears glasses and has a bit of a scruffy beard, but still keeps his hair long, in a style similar to how he had it when younger. He has no automail or traces of it, though there is still old scarring where the prosthetics once were. He also has some scarring on the limbs that were formerly automail, as well as scarring on his stomach and back on the left side. Additionally, he has four long scars across his back that look like very old claw marks.

Cause of Death: Unknown/can't remember (likely accidental)

Impact of Death: Not as severe as if he'd died younger; he will be able to function post-death while realizing he is in fact dead, but will not be happy about either the actual death or the fact that this lousy place is the afterlife.

Character Info: Note: Because I'm extending his life 50 years post-canon and post-Sabra, most of this is headcanon.

Edward's earliest life was simple, happy, and gave no hint to the path he and his brother Alphonse would ultimately walk. When his peaceful childhood was ripped away by their mother's death, he and his brother chose to tread in god's domain and attempt to bring her back through the science of Alchemy. Their attempt backfired, robbing Al of his entire body and Ed of his left leg; he then sacrificed his right arm to bind Al's soul to a suit of armor. Refusing to leave someone he loved in that situation, he was fitted with metal "automail" prosthetics and joined the military to research methods to restore his brother's body. That research ultimately lead to uncovering a centuries-old plot to use the people of his home country of Amestris as fuel for a massive Alchemic reaction. In the heat of the fight to stop that plot, a being from another world stepped in to offer Ed the chance to secure victory and save everyone, if he'd sacrifice his memories and fight to get them back, another sacrifice Ed chose to make.

In his time in Sabra La Tau, a world of mangled memories, deadly games, and fighting to survive in an inhospitable cavern, Edward found himself caught up in the fight to save yet another group of souls, and yet another group of loved ones, a fight that became more familiar the more memories he regained. Ultimately the battle was won, and Ed was able to help save his own world while bringing an end to the dangerous cycle of Sabra once and for all. Victorious, he returned to Amestris a changed person, whole once again, with his lover Jace and new "sister" Dani in tow, more than ready to return to a normal sort of life. His time to resettle was short, however; the wish he made at the end of his time in Sabra restored his body and that of his brother, and brought an end to the major wars tearing the world apart, but work remained, and he stepped up to assist Mustang in his efforts to stabilize their nation once and for all. Still wanting to protect people, he traveled to border towns and the smaller nations that had been absorbed by Amestris in the past, helping them settle and working to quell the fighting.

A creature of habit who came of age while equipped with his prosthetics, he suffered numerous injuries following the loss of them, the result of instinct taking over in fights where once he'd used the metal to his advantage. During his periods of recuperation, as well as the breaks in his travels, he strengthened his family bonds and repaired his long-strained relationship with father, finally ready to recognize the man as part of the family he loved and valued. His old short-term plans fulfilled by his wish, Ed began construction of a new home during this time, as well, but home and family were not enough to tie him consistently to one place, and as the fighting subsided, his endless curiosity and wanderlust drew him to travel. No longer limited to just his own country, he explored not only the nations outside it, but the worlds linked by Sabra's final outburst of power as well. And while most of his focus was on learning whatever he could in these places, he always made time for family when they accompanied him on those journeys.

A fiercely independent young man who didn't care about what the world thought of him, Ed made no efforts to hide his relationship with his same-sex partner, ultimately outing himself through his lack of concern in his mid-20s. Instead of bowing to social pressures, he worked with Mustang, Razzy and others to change the environment and bring alternative lifestyles such as his own more socially acceptable, largely through sheer stubbornness and force of will. The fight didn't quell his desire to roam, however, and he continued his travels into his early 30s. But he never stopped placing his family first, and as his siblings started to have children of their own, he finally felt the desire to stay closer to home. He wanted to ensure a better life for this new generation than what the previous ones had experienced. Ultimately, he chose to share his own knowledge, and that of others, adapting the university concepts he'd encountered in his travels to fit his world, and to allow research and education without ties to the military.

Not long after Ed turned 40, his desire to share in education was realized, as the university opened. He took a role as a professor, boyishly excited about the prospect of sharing what he'd learned in his prior four decades. Between family and teaching, he was able to remain still for several years, spending his weeks in Central and the weekends at his home in Resembool, where his family continued to live and grow. But as he watched the children growing up and into adulthood, his own restlessness resurfaced, as he remembered his own life at their ages. When the youngest graduated, and the oldest began their own families, he chose to take a sabbatical and venture out into the world again, Jace still at his side, understanding that they too were growing older, and would soon not be able to travel the way they did long ago. They spent four years revisiting all the places they'd been, but this time taking the opportunity to experience more than just research, and see how things had changed in their lifetimes. At the end of the period, with Ed now 60, the couple returned to Amestris for good.

While he lost none of his youthful spirit, his years were catching up with him, and he finally started to settle down. He continued teaching, but desiring more time with his family, he took a lighter load than he'd previously had. His travels focused more on the homes of his siblings' children and grandchildren; he'd always viewed them as his own, regretting only slightly that he had no direct offspring of his own. It was only a small regret, however, as he still loved Jace deeply and never would have traded his life with his partner for anything. With the understanding that he couldn't travel anymore, he found ways to content himself with a life lived closer to home, reliving the adventures of his youth in stories told to his family, and written (with enough details changed to mask them as fiction) for the public. While no substitute for actually living new adventures, the stories were enough to allow him to settle with his partner and family for his remaining days.

Family was and always will be the most important thing in Ed's life, whether family by blood or by choice. He sacrificed over and over for family in his early years, and always kept them close to his heart as time went on, making many decisions for their benefit. That's not to say he doesn't care for those he's never met, though--he's gone to great lengths to save strangers as well, in more than one world. His fierce, fiery tendency to jump to the defense of others without thinking as a youth tempered into a more thoughtful, but no less powerful, protectiveness as he aged. He stayed in good shape throughout his life, able to defend his family and those in his charge from any threats, physical or otherwise.

Ed value for knowledge drove him as well. Always striving to learn more and share what he'd learned, his unending curiosity and his wanderer's tendencies developed as a youth searching for answers merged well in his early years. As age wore down his body, his mind remained sharp, fascinated by everything, and he continued to seek out new information. His curiosity extended to the other worlds he visited, as well, though he was always careful to keep more advanced knowledge from influencing his own world too much. Anything and everything could catch his attention, the span of his interests growing as he aged, and once he discovered the joy of sharing that knowledge with others, little could stop him from doing so. He particularly enjoyed combining his love of information with his love of family, telling stories or sharing learning experiences with them.

And as much as he valued those elements of his life, he held life itself equally in high regard. He made many choices through his life, both good and bad, because of his strong respect for the lives of others. The loss of his own earlier than he'd expected will weigh on him, but the loss of so many other lives, of people younger than him, will affect him far more powerfully.

Old Game Info: Ed is coming over from Sabra La Tau (True End), where I played him for a little more than a year and a half. He took the deal as a way to ensure the fight in his world would end without any further casualties. Waking up with no memories on Delphinus, he regained his name and a small taste of his true self the first day, and within a few days learned that he'd already been there, on another team, and had been taken by the earth and stripped of all his memories of time there, which gave him a constant worry it would happen again.

Not particularly the perfect model of the typical Del, he was at odds with his teammates almost from the beginning, whether it was disapproving of morally-questionable tactics, or befriending people some of his teammates hated. Ultimately his differences lead to a major falling-out with his teammates of the time. It took him a while to rebuild himself, but the process helped strengthen the relationships that survived, and those that followed. He managed an overall better relationship with Pavo, Delphinus's partner-team, though things were still a bit awkward.

While he had difficulties with his own teammates, he found a large number of friends, and even a lover, on the other teams. Already unable to easily kill, the friendships he made stopped him from making choices to target others whenever possible in the Games there (again a point of frequent conflict with his teammates). But when Messenger patroned Delphinus and asked them to spread information, these relationships became a boon, making it easy to pass things along to the people he knew.

Ultimately, when Messenger's true motivation became clear, Ed and his teammates found themselves heavily involved in the act of overthrowing King, the ruling Judge of Sabra, and setting free everyone in Sabra. Not just regular blanks, not just those with Judges, but everyone, down to those trapped in the Pillar. The latter, especially, resonated with Ed, because of his history as one of them, though his memories of that time were stripped away. So he fought, for the people who couldn't. He spread information, he employed his skill with alchemy to create barricades against the Judges' senses and to reduce their influence, and he searched for their sources of power, continuing even when threatened directly by King himself. In the end he was able to fight alongside many others in the final battle to help Messenger usurp King and set them all free.

Important relationships:

Jace Beleren: one of his earliest friends, then best friend, and ultimately his lover, the two are monogamous and committed strongly to each other. Each found something in the other that could be used to strengthen themselves, and their deepening affection for each other ultimately lead them to a long-lasting, committed relationship. At the time of his death, they had spent fifty years together, and Ed doesn't know if his partner is still alive or passed on with him (though to a different afterlife).

Danielle "Dani" Phantom, aka Razzy: Another early friend of his, and one whom he felt a more familial affection toward. The two woke up at similar times and hit it off easily, becoming much like siblings as time went on. When everyone finally escaped Sabra, Dani returned with him to make her new home in Amestris, though like him, she travelled quite frequently to other worlds as well. Ed came to consider her as his sister during their time in Sabra, in spite of the two being on different teams.

Howard Link: One of the older members of Delphinus, and the one Ed felt most comfortable around for a very long time. Link tended to be the "mom" of the team, which made it easy to trust and depend on him even in difficult times. Many of Ed's more domestic skills were either learned directly from Link, or alchemic techniques suggested by him. He respects Link as more than just a senior member of the team, but as a stable influence and voice of reason.

Chrono, aka Tide: One of the "youngest" members of Delphinus, coming to Sabra around the same time as the discovery of Messenger's true goals. Ed likes and trusts him a great deal, and his relationship with Chrono was likely the closest to familial of his teammates, though he's still more nakama than "brother." He cares about him and wants him to pursue his own happiness, rather than hiding away and letting himself suffer.

Messenger/Ptou: Ed grew quite fond of Delphinus's patron Judge, which grew continually from the time of entering Messenger's heart until the time he left Sabra following their victory. He is extremely grateful to Messenger for all he was able to do for the Blanks of the final cycle, and holds no grudge toward Messenger's claims of being "one of the villains" for so many cycles previous. While he did wish that Messenger would have left and taken the chance at a new life, like Librarian and Persona/Wonderella did, he understood his desire to stay behind in the end.

These are just the most vital relationships; because of the close-quarters nature of Sabra, he will likely at least know of nearly every character coming over from there, even if he doesn't personally know them well. He won't specifically know the Old!Sabra ones, but may recognize at least something about them, as he does retain some of the memories of his own Old!Sabra counterpart.

Abilities (before Powercap): He is a capable fighter and alchemist; his alchemy remains extremely powerful, but as he's aged his fighting skills are beginning to lessen a bit. Still capable by any definition, he's no longer the acrobatic powerhouse he was as a teen, and prefers a more subdued fighting style these days. He also hasn't engaged in many actual battles over recent years, but he continues to train to maintain his health.

Abilities (after Powercap): Since his fighting level is basically down to "normal human" (if well trained) levels, it likely won't be changed much at all. His endurance and stamina are not what they once were, though he'll remain quite capable of holding his own, at least against other badass normals. Against anyone with higher-level powers, he may be able to hold them off for a time, but will certainly wear down eventually.

As he no longer has his automail, he cannot fight using the transmuted automail blade anymore, and thus will have to fight unarmed or create/carry a weapon to use. The type of weapons he creates (which will likely skew toward longer spears and pole-arms) will be dependent on the materials available in Thusia. Similarly, any offensive maneuvers such as spike waves and fists will be restricted by the materials available, and Thusia's own rules governing Alchemy.

He'll still be able to make repairs in clothing and objects, and can create small objects with sufficient materials, but can't do any large or spectacular things like creating entire buildings, large objects (furniture, etc), or complex objects where he doesn't know the full structure (siege engines, etc). I am very easy OOCly with reasonable requests for things he can or can't do and will gladly work with people involved, moderator requests, and house rules.

Items Brought In: A silver pocketwatch (not the one he has in canon), and a personal journal with a number of notes and a couple of photographs tucked inside.

Honestly, I thought I was done with these kinds of adventures and bad ideas. These sort of schemes are for the younger ones, the ones who still have enough energy to match their ambitions. I've already spent my energy running around the multiverse, my time for plots like this one is long past.

Not that I'm feeble or anything! I'm still good in a fight, but I was really starting to like the idea of a quiet life, and now I'm stuck here, in a place where no one belongs. I can't even remember anything about how it happened, but it's too soon, isn't it? Even for as long as I've lived, it's still too soon. And all these kids here... dammit, I was supposed to spend this time with the grandkids, and maybe even their children too, not a bunch of poor kids who never got the chance to live even as much as I did.

Ah, guess I'll have to make the best of this lousy situation. If I can't take care of my own family anymore, then I'll do what I can for the kids here. And they'd better not count me out in a fight just for being old, I'm not useless yet!

Fill out the survey below ICly:

Introduce yourself in a few sentences.
I'm Edward Elric, also known as the Fullmetal Alchemist back when I was in the military, even after I lost the "metal" part of myself. Been retired a good long time, now, but people still remember me as that after all the stunts I pulled off in my younger days.
Describe yourself physically.
Tall, fit and still good looking after all these years! Got a few extra scars from my adventures, but they're nothing I'm ashamed of, just signs of all the fighting for good I did when I was younger. And I've still got almost all the color in my hair, though Jace likes to say the white showing up on the sides makes me look "distinguished." Between you and me, I think it looks better on him.
What was your childhood like?
Early on, it wasn't too bad, other than when the old man ran out on us. Resembool was a quiet place for Al and me to grow up in, and it was a nice life until Mom died. That's really when everything fell apart. We didn't want to go on without her, so the two of us tried to bring her back... cost us Al's entire body and my leg, and I gave my arm up to keep him around. I guess you could say our childhood really ended about that time, when I got the automail and joined up with the military to try to put everything right.
Who is most important to you, and why?
My family--not just the ones related by blood, because that'd leave me with just Alphonse, and his kids. Jace, Winry and Dani are all included in that, too, and more. Because anyone will stick around when you're at your best, but when you really need it, family's always there, and you know you'll always be there for them, too, for no reason other than that they're family. It's unconditional, that sort of a love, and it binds you beyond just blood.
What's your biggest pet peeve?
I haven't really thought about that much. But when people are willing to hurt others to get their way--that really pisses me off. Doesn't matter how right you think you are, no one has the right to hurt someone else just to get their way. No one's goals are worth more than someone's life.
Do you consider yourself an optimist or a pessimist? Why?
Definitely an optimist. There's always a way to reach your goals, no matter what's standing in your way. Hell, just look at all the stuff I managed before I even turned 20! And that was just the start of it. Didn't matter what life, or other people, or fate, or whatever you want to call it threw at me, I kept finding ways to overcome it and keep moving forward.
Where, or how, did you learn your most important skills?
The alchemy and fighting I learned from our teacher, Izumi Curtis. Al and I studied Dad's books when we were younger, but that only took us so far, so we asked her to teach us when we decided we needed to go farther. The transmutation-without-an-array thing I learned by looking at the Truth--don't really recommend it, either, there's better ways to learn to transmute quickly. Even all these years later, I still think that thing was creepy, and the price it takes isn't worth the benefit.
Do you think world peace is possible?
I couldn't even manage that with the power of a wish granted by a god, but there's always a chance, because people are stronger, as long as they work together. We've had some good stability here for a long time, but I'm not naive enough to think it will last forever. The tensions are still there, people have just learned to defuse them better than they used to, and with luck, it will stay that way for a while yet.
Do you tend to argue with people, or avoid conflict?
Hahhah... I'd like to pretend I'm more easy-going, but I can still manage a good argument if I need to! Especially if it's something important to me, I can't just stand by and let things slide. It's not my style, never has been.
What turns you on the most?
I--what? Why would you ask something like that? I never answer those kinds of questions! That's personal!
Anything else you'd like to say?
No, I don't have anything left, especially not after that last question.
